Term 1 Wrap Up!

Things are coming to a close on Term 1. This means a few things for each class.

Grade 9 SS - ALL 4 of your Article Analysis are due for submission. I would like these in to me by Monday, January 16th (at the absolute LATEST).
* We have just begun studying our Unit on Canadian Government

Grade 9 ELA - All poetry essays should be submitted to me by Friday, January 13th. Students who are presenting their work as a speech will be scheduled for presentations this week.

Grade 8 ELA - Currently students are working on a provincial assessment piece. After reading an article students must criticize its topic in a written response. We are currently completing the practice exercise based on the article "Unreal Reality". Assessments will be made and sent home to students with their Term 1 reports.

Whoa! Time is flying. Here's what happening in Room 303 right... NOW!

Grade 9 Social Studies - Students are reviewing immigration. The history Canada's population and where immigrants have come from over the past 150 years has been covered. Students will be participating in an exercise this week where they will have to be a citizen who is trying to immigrate into Canada at different times in history.

Grade 9 ELA - Currently we are looking at poetry. The assignment on student's agendas most recently has been their CD jewel case piece. Due dates for this assignment have not yet been set but the last week of November would seem about right.

Grade 8 ELA - Students are completing their essays about the novel the Giver. Individual pieces for the Giver assignment (additional chapter, map of the community, test of the novel, letter to Jonas, comic strip or novel comparison reviews) are due Friday, November 25.

Gr 8 ELA - The Giver continues... So far you have completed two written assignments for this book. As we've moved through this novel we have learned a lot about Jonas' "alternative community". Get ready for the climactic conclusion and final report assignment.

Gr 9 ELA - The Pigman is DONE. Assessment of assignments throughout this novel were insightful. Now your final writing pieces are being drafted in class. Make sure you are in attendance and writing thoughtfully!

Gr 9 Social - We have finished reviewing Early Canadian History and Identity and begun studying Canadian Geography and Immigration. Anticipate a vocabulary quiz - SOON!

Alright! October is upon us... Here's the run down for what's up in your classes.

Gr 9 Social Studies - An introduction to Canada is coming to a close with a brief Canadian History Quiz this week. Reviewing your green sheets and the Confederation information will prepare you for success.

Gr 9 English - We're currently more than half way through our novel study of the Pigman. Your second assignment should be coming in to me this week. Finishing up this novel, and drawing up final assignments are on the horizon.

Gr 8 English - We've just begun reading a novel called the Giver by Lois Lowry. Some students may have read it before, but the language and themes contained within it are quite advanced. A first assignment has been distributed to students and is in the process of being completed.

For example...

For 9-1 & 9-5 in

Social Studies: We are currently focusing on the origins of Canada as well as looking at exactly what shapes our Canadian identity.

*Look for a letter to come home soon asking your parents for permission to go on a field trip to the St. Boniface Museum...

ELA: We are well into our class novel study, Paul Zindel's The Pigman. The first assignments for this book will be due by Tuesday (9-5) & Wednesday (9-1) of this week. Heads up.

For 8-3 in

ELA: We are currently reviewing the elements of short stories. Having read a few different short stories already we will begin to start looking at drafting our own for publishing soon. :)
